Global Cooling

As we are lucky enough to live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world we think it is very important to do our bit towards 'Global Cooling'.
After a little research and investigation we have identified several changes we can make to reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment. It is however very important to us that we make these changes without compromising our high standards of hospitality.
What we are doing...
- Recycling bins are provided in resort so we can recycle all bottles, plastics, tins and papers.
- Ensure that all our appliances are turned off at the mains overnight and during the day when the chalet is empty.
- Replace old style light bulbs with energy saving bulbs.
- Where possible buy locally grown and/or seasonal produce (organic if available).
- Keep the use of vehicles to a minimum.
- By using e-mail and the internet more we can keep the business as paper free as possible i.e. e-mails rather than post, no paper brochures or unnecessary flyers.
- Our toilets have a low water flush option to reduce water consumption.
- Monitoring the temperature within the chalet carefully - turning the heating down by just 1 degree can have a big impact. During the evening we'll use the wood burning stove which is fuelled with renewable logs.
- We now use Ecover cleaning products for the housekeeping and laundry.
What the S3V are doing...
The S3V (Societes des 3 Vallees) is the company that runs the majority of the lifts in the 3 valleys, in recent years they have taken a greener approach to the way they maintain and run this great ski area. This is what they have done…
- They have created a partnership with the « Parc National de la Vanoise » to help inform and make people aware of the need for the preservation of the natural reserves.
- They have created a partnership with GEG, using exclusively green energy.
- All of their ski lifts are supplied with electricity produced by hydro electric stations in the heart of the Alps.
- Utilisation of a biodegradable oil for all plant and machinery.
- Manmade snow with no additives.
- Protective measures to help the survival of the "coqs de Bruyère".
- 'No more cigarette butts in the snow' - Each winter, 10000 cigarette butts are thrown in to the snow under the chairlifts. A cigarette butt pollutes a square meter of snow and takes several years to biodegrade. So as to limit this problem, the S3V asks skiers not to dispose of anything harmful to the natural surroundings. Discover how they are implementing this at the Signal chairlift in Courchevel 1650, the Coqs chairlift in Courchevel 1850, the Côte Brune chairlift in Méribel Mottaret.
And finally what YOU can do...
- Which ever way you travel you can donate to carbon offsetting charities. Have a look at the Climate Care website to see how you can travel with a clear conscience.
- Consider the train as a travel option. Not only will the train will take you 20 minutes away from La Tania, you will get an extra two days on the hill - also the Eurostar has announced that as of November 14th 2007 it will be carbon neutral.
- If you are driving out (with a full car) make sure your tyres are at the right pressure, too little and your fuel consumption will increase as will the wear. You could also consider a tune before you go this will also keep fuel consumption down.
- Pack thoughtfully! A little time spent considering exactly what you are really going to need could reduce the weight of your baggage considerably. Hiring skis and boots in resort will also go along way to lightening your load.
- Don’t drop litter when you are on the hill.
- Buy local produce.
- When off piste be careful where you ski and snowboard - you may be in and environmentally sensitive area.
- While away on holiday ensure you turn off all your appliances at home.
- If you’re too warm in the chalet turn the heating down rather than just opening the window.
